Strawberries are extremely popular in Japan, with many different varieties being produced, and a long growing season that takes advantage of the geography and varied climate of Japan. Fruit sandwiches are also popular in Japan – the fresh cream and strawberry ones being a big favourite.
Square Watermelon Kokeshi
Watermelons are a very welcome refreshing fruit in Japan, which has very hot summers, and they come in many different shapes and sizes there, including square ones grown in molds, originally to allow them to fit into the tight space of a refrigerator better. A game called suikawari (スイカ割り) involves splitting a watermelon with a stick, like a piñata.
Like most Japanese fruit, a lot of work goes into producing apples in Japan, with ever evolving research about pruning and the amount of sunlight they receive. The most popular apples by far in Japan are big, crisp, juicy and red, with fuji apples from Aomori being consistent best sellers.
She might look a little like a dekopon (sumo citrus), but this little Kokeshi is wishing she was a yuzu – the very popular citrus used for its juice and aromatic rind. That way she might get to also soak in a hot bath on the winter solstice…
Every card is hand printed using water based non-toxic Japanese pigment ink onto 320g oatmeal 100% recycled thin card (with natural flecks). Blank inside for your own message.
