Found Wood Girl - Cirque V
Being surrounded by old things all my life (born into a family of antique dealers) has definitely left its mark – I have a mixture of old and new pieces in my house, with a particular fondness for old wood – there’s really nothing like it. I now occasionally gather bits and pieces that I think might be coaxed into living a new and wholly unexpected life – either vintage objects or parts of wooden things long since past their original purpose. I have assembled and painted some ‘found wood’ dolls from these parts or objects – total one-offs and priced accordingly.
I used to work in a circus school, surrounded by the colours and patterns of that world, and my 'cirque' series draws inspiration from that life. When I come across a distinctive or extra special piece of vintage wood that suggests a personality to me, I begin assembling and upcycling the piece/s into a wood girl for the series.
This girl has a beautiful large collar that has some lovely grain across it, and her cheeky face has a smooth rich colour from the vintage wooden ball used. She has been decorated in a soft peach and blue colourway with delicate white dots and stripes. She has been finished with two coats of matt acrylic
Stamped underneath with my red 'nakamura' stamp, she stands 29cm high. The collar is 15cm wide.
