Being surrounded by old things all my life (born into a family of antique dealers) has definitely left its mark – I have a mixture of old and new pieces in my house, with a particular fondness for old wood – there’s really nothing like it. I began to gather bits and pieces that I thought might be coaxed into living a new and wholly unexpected life – either vintage objects or parts of wooden things long since past their original purpose. I have assembled and painted some ‘found wood’ Kokeshi from these parts or objects – total one-offs and priced accordingly.

This creative kokeshi is very large and heavy, being partly constructed from an old inlaid wood lamp base. After sanding, she has been painted with gouache and watercolour and polished. The Victorian wooden bowl used for her head has intricate lines in a pattern - resulting in spirals on each side, reminding me of Princess Leia's hairdo in Star Wars! She is constructed from old found wood with minimal intervention - please note that the wooden ball used for her head had an old crack in it, that I have left as is - please make sure you consult the pictures carefully and that you are happy with the design and condition before purchasing. They have been finished in two coats of Danish oil for wood and gently polished with a soft cloth. Stamped underneath with ‘nakamura’ characters [中村] in red ink.
Measures approximately 42cm in height.
Please note: THIS IS NOT A TOY and should be kept out of the reach of children.
