Incense Bowl - Kayari Buta pig burner design
My favourite way to burn incense in my home is in an incense bowl. In Japanese temples, the sheer volume of incense burned has meant there is enough ash to stand the incense in, but for my own, I use coloured sand bought from a pet store (where it is sold as a base for fish tanks). The design is inspired by the summertime mosquito coil burners used in Japan, most commonly in the shape of pigs with wide open mouths!
Porcelain, wheel thrown vessel, dipped in blue slip (liquid clay) then freehand carved to reveal the design and fired in an electric kiln. Coated in a clear glossy glaze, and then fired again to 1260 degrees. Food and dishwasher safe, although hand washing is recommended. Bottom carved with a bear face and ginkgo leaf design.
