shrine to Frida

Sold out

A total one-off piece, which came about because I had re-read the Frida biography by Hayden Herrera and thoughts of Frida always get stuck in my head afterwards. So I decided to paint her in wood girl form, in the style of the photograph by Nickolas Muray entitled 'Frida on a white bench'. Frida is dressed in one of her Mexican outfits - this time a black skirt and top with embroidered yellow and red detailing and a black shawl and gold jewellery - and a blue hair band with roses piled on top. The interior of the box has green 'wallpaper' covered with pink cherry blossoms and lower down a white grapevine pattern that is common on iron garden benches of a certain era.

The busy interior is contrasted with the look of a wooden building on the outside with a green painted Japanese style tiled roof. On the back of the box there is a large Frida-style roaring bear head, with a painted orange ribbon and the text '2026 shrine to Frida based on 'Frida on a white bench' by Nickolas Muray, New York, 1939'. The Frida wood girl also has a bear head painted on the bottom with roses on its head.

The box has a brass hanger on the back.

Wall box size: Approximately 30.5cm high/ 20.5cm wide/ 10cm deep.
