artist prototype - blue boombox
Artist notes:
Along with my love of vending machines and launderettes, I have a soft spot for vintage boomboxes and cassette players - and use my own 1970's Hitachi one all the time. What makes a boombox? It needs to have at least two loudspeakers, an amplifier, a radio tuner and a cassette player - all in a plastic or metal case with a carry handle. It can run off batteries or be plugged in. They were portable but they were also pretty bulky and many had good sound - none of the tinny sound you get from todays phone speakers, unless it was a really cheap one!
I've made miniature versions before, but wanted to make a chunkier piece that could house a small wood girl or two - so came this prototype. Made from a large block of basswood, it has been painted in a blue colourway and is partly based on my Hitachi TRK-8080 radio cassette player - but the brand name is renamed 'BEARTACHI'. The two inserted wood girls form the knobs on the top and can come out for display. There is a leather strap carry handle and a vintage metal knitting needle forms the perfect aerial. This was made to work out what would be needed to remake and replicate a similar object in the future but is unique as it is a larger size than any subsequent ones will be. The wood girls should be placed in gently and not pushed down as they may get stuck.
The piece is painted underneath with a blue bear head and the text 'blue bear vending co. 2026', and there is a blue bear 'sticker' painted on one end.
Piece measures approximately 22cm wide x 18cm tall (including carry strap but excluding aerial) x 5cm deep.
My pieces are painted in a naïve and simple style, with visible brush strokes and differing paint consistencies. It is important to note that these dolls are made from real wood which will have naturally occurring markings and grain, and sometimes there will be small amount of bleeding along the grain, or knots, which is to be expected when using untreated wood - please make sure you consult the pictures carefully before purchasing. Finished in a top coat of matt acrylic.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
THIS IS NOT A TOY and should be kept out of the reach of children.
Wood girls should be kept away from water which can damage the wood and painted surface, and also away from direct heat/ sunlight which also can affect the surface colour and the timber itself.
