Artist's notes on style, materials and inspiration:
A new design for 2023 - a chunkier 'head' piece, to give this grumpy piece a bit more presence. She is also a nice shape to hold in the hand.
From a print I once made about 'cross' kokeshi dolls which had a monoprint scribble above their heads, this wood girl has taken her grumpy cloud to a new 3D level. The grumpy ‘scribble’ is formed from soft aluminium wire, and can be bent easily, so please handle with care – you can do some careful reshaping after unpacking if required.
Approximately 10cm high (without grumpy cloud), 17cm high including grumpy cloud. All big grumps are numbered on the base, this is #8.
Turned from American Tulipwood, a sustainable and interestingly grained timber, my pieces are turned on a lathe by a production wood turner in the UK to my designs, then painted by me, a British artist. She has been added to, hand painted and finished in a matt acrylic protective top coat.
My pieces are painted in a naïve and simple style, with visible brush strokes and differing paint consistencies. It is important to note that these dolls are made from real wood which will have naturally occurring markings and grain, and sometimes there will be small amount of bleeding along the grain, which is to be expected when using untreated wood - please make sure you consult the pictures carefully before purchasing.
Stamped underneath with roaring bear logo in blue ink, and numbered in red ink.
Please note: THIS IS NOT A TOY and should be kept out of the reach of children. Wood girls should be kept away from water which can damage the wood and painted surface, and also away from direct heat/ sunlight which also can affect the surface colour and the timber itself.
