Sparrows at Fujino Fruit & Vegetables - original
Fujino Fruit and Vegetables is now a lost gem - when we visited in January 2020, the elderly owner was setting up his store in the quiet of the new year shopping street, and proudly showed us a painting of him and his store attached to one of the building pillars. I was happy to buy a straw rope decoration from him, whilst delighting in the mish mash of buckets and labels, pickled cabbages, shredded carrot and burdock root and flowers. As is typical of Tokyo nowadays, just over a year later the building has been completely replaced with a new one - the only thing to orient you is the pillar on which the painting once hung. I will make more paintings of Mr. Fujino's store, so that it will be remembered.
My paintings are a mix of sketch, painting and illustration - a visual journal of my love for the city streets of Japan.
